Samsung Washer Showing "5C" Error - Why It Doesn't Exist (and What the Code Really Is)

A homeowner in Edgemont searched "5C error Samsung washer" and found nothing useful. The code was SC - Samsung's 7-segment display renders the letter S as the digit 5, making the code look like "5C" on-screen. SC means drain error. Cause: pump filter packed with coins, a hair tie, and EMWD mineral scale. Cleared same visit in 45 minutes for $95. No parts needed.

The Call

A homeowner in Edgemont called about a Samsung front-load washer that had stopped mid-cycle and was displaying what they read as "5C." They had searched the code online, found almost nothing useful - a few forum posts, some contradictory answers - and assumed it was an unusual or serious error. The washer was a few years old and had never shown an error before. Laundry was piling up.

Before we even left for the call, we knew what the code was. "5C" isn't a real Samsung error code - it's what SC looks like on Samsung's 7-segment display, where the letter S renders as the numeral 5. SC is Samsung's drain error, meaning the washer tried to drain and couldn't. That narrows the diagnosis significantly before you're in the driveway.

The 7-Segment Display Problem (Why Nobody Can Find "5C")

A 7-segment display is the type of digital readout made of seven individual bar segments that can illuminate in different combinations to represent numbers and a limited set of letters. Samsung uses this display on many of its front-load washer models. The problem is that some letters look nearly identical to numbers on a 7-segment display - and S is one of them.

On a 7-segment display, S and 5 are lit by the same segments in almost the same configuration. From a normal viewing angle, they are essentially indistinguishable. So when Samsung's washer throws an SC error, homeowners read "5C" - and "5C" returns almost no useful results online because it isn't the actual code name in any documentation.

The same thing happens with the digit 1 and the letter I, with B and 8, and with G and 6 depending on the font. Samsung is not the only manufacturer with this issue, but the SC/5C confusion is the one we see come up most often in service calls across Moreno Valley, particularly in Edgemont where the housing stock skews toward newer builds with LG and Samsung appliances.

What We Found

SC on a Samsung front-loader means the washer failed to complete a drain cycle. The causes, in order of likelihood: clogged drain pump filter, kinked or clogged drain hose, failed drain pump motor, or a control board fault triggering a false drain error.

We went to the pump filter access panel first - a small door near the bottom front of the machine. When we unscrewed the filter cap, the water that had been sitting in the pump housing drained out (as expected - we positioned a towel and shallow tray). The filter itself was packed: two coins, a hair tie, a clump of lint, and a crust of mineral scale from Moreno Valley's hard EMWD water that had essentially glued the debris together into a partial plug.

The EMWD water hardness in Edgemont runs 200–350 mg/L depending on the season. At that hardness, mineral deposits accumulate on the inside of the filter housing and around the pump impeller over time. In this case, the mineral buildup had narrowed the drain path enough that the coin and hair tie tipped it from "draining slowly" into "failed drain cycle."

Filter cleared and housing cleaned. We ran three complete drain cycles. Washer drained completely each time, no error codes, no hesitation.

The Repair

No parts were needed. The total charge was $95 - our standard diagnostic fee plus the filter service. We also recommended a monthly citric acid rinse cycle ($5 at any grocery store, one tablespoon in the drum on a hot cycle) to slow mineral scale buildup in the pump housing and hose.

The code is SC - a drain error. Before calling anyone, try this: locate the small access panel near the bottom front of your washer. Unscrew the filter cap slowly (position a towel first - water will come out). Pull the filter out, clean it under running water, clear any debris from the housing, and reinstall. Run a spin/drain cycle. If the washer drains normally, you're done.
