If your dishwasher won't drain, start with the filter at the bottom of the tub - a clogged filter is the single most common cause and takes two minutes to clean yourself. If that's clear, check the drain hose for kinks and the garbage disposal connection for a blocked knockout plug. Most drain repairs run $80–$200 and are completed same-visit.
Opening the dishwasher expecting clean, dry dishes and finding a pool of cloudy water sitting at the bottom instead is one of the most common kitchen frustrations we hear about from homeowners across Moreno Valley. A dishwasher not draining doesn't just leave dishes dirty, it can leave standing water that starts to smell if it sits too long.
The good news is that a drainage problem is one of the more straightforward dishwasher issues to diagnose, and several common causes are things homeowners can check themselves before calling for service.
This guide covers why dishwashers stop draining, what to check first, and when it's time for professional dishwasher repair in Moreno Valley.
Why Is My Dishwasher Not Draining?
A dishwasher not draining is most often caused by a clogged drain filter, a blocked drain hose, a kinked hose behind the unit, or a failing drain pump. In homes with a garbage disposal connection, a clogged disposal knockout plug is also a frequent culprit. Hard water mineral buildup, common throughout Riverside County, can make several of these issues worse over time.
How a Dishwasher's Drain System Works
A dishwasher's drain system is simpler than the wash system, but it depends on several parts working in sequence to pull dirty water out at the end of each cycle.
Drain Filter
Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub that catches food debris before it reaches the pump. This is the single most common place a drain problem starts, and the easiest to fix yourself.
Drain Pump
The drain pump pushes wastewater out of the tub and through the drain hose. If the pump's impeller is jammed by debris or the motor itself has failed, water has nowhere to go.
Drain Hose
The hose that carries water from the dishwasher to either the garbage disposal or a dedicated drain line. It can become clogged with food particles and grease, or physically kinked if the dishwasher was recently moved or reinstalled.
Air Gap or High Loop
Most dishwasher installations include either an air gap (the small cylinder on the sink deck) or a high loop in the drain hose, both designed to prevent dirty sink water from siphoning back into the dishwasher. A clogged air gap can block drainage just as effectively as a clogged hose.
Garbage Disposal Connection
If the dishwasher drains through the garbage disposal, a knockout plug inside the disposal has to be removed during installation. If it was never removed, or if the disposal chamber itself is clogged, the dishwasher won't be able to drain at all.
With the system mapped out, let's look at the specific causes technicians see most often.
Common Reasons a Dishwasher Won't Drain
1. Clogged Drain Filter
Food debris, bones, labels, and produce stickers build up in the filter over time. This is the most common cause of poor drainage and the one homeowners can fix themselves in a few minutes.
2. Blocked or Kinked Drain Hose
Grease and food particles can build up inside the hose over years of use, gradually restricting flow. A recently installed or moved dishwasher can also have a hose that's simply bent too sharply behind the cabinet.
3. Clogged Garbage Disposal or Knockout Plug
Extremely common after a new garbage disposal installation if the plumber forgets to knock out the dishwasher inlet plug. If your dishwasher never drained properly since a disposal was installed, this is worth checking first.
4. Failing Drain Pump
A jammed or worn-out drain pump can't move water effectively. Symptoms often include a humming noise during the drain phase with little or no water actually leaving the tub.
5. Clogged Air Gap
If your sink has the small chrome or plastic cylinder near the faucet, food debris and grease can clog it over time, which backs up the entire drain path.
6. Faulty Drain Valve or Check Valve
Some dishwashers use a check valve to prevent water from flowing back into the tub after draining. If it sticks closed, water can't exit properly during the drain cycle.
Understanding these causes makes the troubleshooting process below much more straightforward. If your dishwasher's drainage issues are affecting related plumbing, our garbage disposal repair service can help address shared drain-line problems.
Still finding standing water after every cycle?
Why This Is Extra Common in Moreno Valley
Riverside County's hard water leaves mineral deposits throughout a dishwasher's internal components over time, including the filter screen, drain pump impeller, and check valve. This buildup narrows passages that were originally clear, making a dishwasher more prone to drainage problems as it ages, even with regular use and reasonable care.
Running an occasional dishwasher-safe descaling treatment can help slow this buildup, particularly in homes without a water softener. The EPA's WaterSense program has more on water-efficient appliances and softener selection if hard water is a recurring issue in your home.
Troubleshooting Steps Homeowners Can Try
Several drainage issues can be resolved without a service call. Try these steps in order.
1. Clean the Drain Filter
- Remove the bottom rack for access
- Twist and lift out the cylindrical filter (check your manual if unsure)
- Rinse it thoroughly under running water, using a soft brush for stuck-on debris
- Reinstall and run a short cycle to test
2. Check the Garbage Disposal
If your dishwasher drains through a disposal, run the disposal for a few seconds to clear anything sitting in the chamber. If the dishwasher has never drained well since the disposal was installed, the knockout plug may still be in place and needs a plumber or technician to remove it.
3. Inspect the Air Gap
If your sink has an air gap, remove the cap and check for debris inside, then clear it out. This is a common and easy-to-miss cause of drainage backup.
4. Check the Drain Hose for Kinks
If the dishwasher was recently moved or installed, look behind the unit for a hose that's bent too sharply, which restricts flow just like a kinked garden hose.
5. Run a Hot Water Cycle
Run the kitchen sink hot water for a minute before starting the dishwasher. This clears cold water from the line and can help the dishwasher's pump work more effectively on the first cycle.
If the dishwasher still won't drain after these steps, the drain pump or a check valve is the most likely remaining cause, and that requires opening up the unit to inspect and test.
Warning Signs You Need a Professional
- Standing water remains after multiple cycles, even after clearing the filter
- A humming or grinding noise during the drain phase
- Water backing up into the sink during the wash cycle
- A persistent musty or sour smell from standing water
- Water leaking onto the floor near the dishwasher
Letting standing water sit for extended periods can lead to mold growth and unpleasant odors that linger even after the drainage issue is fixed, so it's worth addressing promptly.

Why Is There Standing Water in the Bottom of My Dishwasher?
Standing water after a completed cycle almost always means something is blocking the drain path - usually the filter, the drain hose, or the garbage disposal connection. It can also mean a failed drain pump. Start with the filter; it takes two minutes and fixes a large percentage of these calls without any parts.
Can I Run My Dishwasher if It's Not Draining?
We don't recommend it. Running cycles on top of standing water can stress the pump motor and leave food debris fermenting in the tub. It can also cause water to overflow if the drain is fully blocked. Clean the filter first; if it still doesn't drain, hold off on running it until the cause is found.
How Much Does Dishwasher Drain Repair Cost?
A simple filter clean or hose unkink can be done as part of a diagnosis visit. A drain pump replacement typically runs $150–$300 in Moreno Valley depending on the brand. We give you a firm price before any work starts - the diagnosis tells us which it is. See our full appliance repair cost guide for pricing on every other appliance.
Does Hard Water Affect Dishwasher Drainage?
Yes. Moreno Valley sits in EMWD territory with water hardness running 200–350 mg/L. Mineral scale builds up inside the filter housing, drain hose, and pump over time, narrowing the flow path and making clogs more likely. Running a monthly citric acid rinse cycle extends time between service calls noticeably.

FAQs
Why is there standing water in the bottom of my dishwasher?
A small amount of water (about a cup) sitting around the drain area after a cycle is normal and keeps the seal from drying out. Anything more than that usually means the drain hose, filter, or drain pump is blocked.
How much does dishwasher repair cost in Moreno Valley?
Most dishwasher repairs in Moreno Valley range from $89 to $349. Clearing a clogged drain hose or filter is typically on the lower end, while a full drain pump replacement usually runs $150–$250.
Can I run the garbage disposal to fix a dishwasher that won't drain?
If your dishwasher drains through the garbage disposal (a common setup), a clogged disposal knockout plug or a full disposal chamber can absolutely cause dishwasher drainage problems. Running the disposal briefly can sometimes clear a blockage, but persistent issues need a closer look.
Is it worth repairing a dishwasher that won't drain, or should I replace it?
In most cases, yes. Clogs, filter issues, and drain pump replacements are relatively inexpensive compared to a new dishwasher, especially on units under 8–10 years old from a reliable brand.
Can I Run My Dishwasher if It's Not Draining?
We'd recommend against it. Running a dishwasher with a drainage problem traps dirty water inside, recirculates it over your dishes, and can overheat the drain pump. It can also cause water to back up into the sink or overflow onto the floor. A clogged filter is a 5-minute fix - worth checking before running another cycle.
Does Hard Water Affect Dishwasher Drainage?
Yes, significantly. Moreno Valley's water tests at 200–350 mg/L hardness (Eastern Municipal Water District). That scale builds up on the drain pump impeller, filter mesh, and drain hose over time, restricting flow until a full clog develops. Monthly citric acid rinse cycles and quarterly filter checks slow the buildup.
How long should a dishwasher last?
Most dishwashers last 8–12 years with regular filter cleaning and occasional maintenance. Hard water buildup is the biggest factor that shortens dishwasher lifespan in the Moreno Valley area.
